🧩 Early Signs of Autism Every Parent Should Know

As a mom, you know your child best. Trust your instincts. Early detection of autism can make a huge difference in your child’s growth and development. Here are some early signs to look out for — usually noticeable before age 2:

👀 Social & Emotional Signs

  • Rarely makes eye contact

  • Doesn’t respond to their name by 12 months

  • Shows limited facial expressions (no smiling, frowning, etc.)

  • Prefers being alone or doesn’t seek comfort when upset

🗣️ Communication Delays

  • No babbling or pointing by 12 months

  • Delayed speech or no words by 16 months

  • Repeats words or phrases over and over (echolalia)

  • Doesn’t understand simple directions like “come here”

🧠 Behavioral Differences

  • Repetitive movements (hand flapping, rocking, spinning)

  • Very focused on routines; gets upset with changes

  • Fascinated by parts of toys (e.g., spinning wheels) rather than playing with the whole toy

  • Unusual sensory responses (e.g., overreacts to sounds, textures, or lights)

💡 Remember:

Not all children with these signs are on the autism spectrum, and every child develops at their own pace. But if you notice several of these behaviors, it’s okay to ask questions and seek help.

📌 Early intervention is powerful.
Talk to your pediatrician. You’re not overreacting — you’re being a proactive, loving parent.
