👶 "Baby Secretions 101: What’s Normal, What’s Not & What Moms Should Do"

As moms, even the tiniest sneeze or mucus from our babies can spark worry. But not all secretions are bad—some are part of how babies adjust to the world. Let’s break down what’s normal, when to worry, and what first aid or home care can help.

🤧 1. Nasal Mucus (Sipon)

💡What it is: Clear or slightly white mucus is common, especially in newborns adjusting to air.
✅ First Aid/Home Remedy:

  • Use a nasal aspirator or bulb syringe

  • Saline drops to loosen mucus

  • Keep baby’s head slightly elevated during sleep (for older babies)
🚩 When to worry: If mucus turns yellow/green and comes with fever or labored breathing.

😮‍💨 2. Cough with Phlegm

💡What it is: Baby’s way to clear mucus from lungs or throat.
✅ First Aid:

  • Steam inhalation or warm bathroom steam for 10–15 mins

  • Frequent breastfeeding or formula feeding for hydration

  • Keep room humidified
🚩 When to worry: Baby struggles to breathe, has high fever, or sounds wheezy.

👁️ 3. Eye Discharge (Muta)

💡What it is: Common in newborns due to blocked tear ducts.
✅ First Aid:

  • Clean with sterile warm water and cotton

  • Gently massage the tear duct area
🚩 When to worry: If the discharge is yellow/green and eyes are red/swollen—consult a pediatrician.

👂 4. Ear Discharge

💡What it is: Could be wax or sign of infection.
✅ First Aid:

  • DO NOT insert anything into the baby’s ear

  • Wipe outside only with clean cloth
🚩 When to worry: If discharge smells bad, baby pulls ear, or has fever.

🛑 General First Aid Tips for Secretions:

  • Always wash your hands before touching baby’s face.

  • Use clean cloths, cotton balls, or sterile wipes.

  • Keep your baby hydrated.

  • Watch for signs of difficulty breathing, fever, or unusual behavior.

👩‍⚕️ When to See a Doctor:

  • High fever

  • Refusal to feed

  • Difficulty breathing

  • Persistent colored discharge

Trust your instincts. You know when something doesn’t feel right. But remember—some secretions are your baby’s way of adapting. Keep calm, stay informed, and always have a clean towel (or two) nearby. 💕
